I Love A Good Snow Day Sewing Session!
It's been awhile since I've updated this space. Get yourself a bowl of popcorn and let's catch up!
In my last post I mentioned that I was making a quilt for advent at church. The series we were following for the season had a different quilt block for each Sunday in advent. Pastor Doyle asked if I could make a quilt with all the blocks and I said yes!
There weren't specific instructions on how to make the blocks, just line drawings. Through a little trial and error, I was able to make the blocks the same size. (Here it is, sideways on the altar haha) I copied the color scheme that came with the advent series. My friend Kris suggested the gold background fabric. I think it really makes the whole quilt pop!
I ended up quilting this over Thanksgiving at my mom's house on her machine. It was my 50th birthday and we all watched the Hallmark Christmas movie, "Hot Frosty!" Good times 😊 I like how the quilt turned out and people at church said they liked it, too.
In the fall, I made a few of these folded star potholders because I saw a giant quilt version of them at our LMQG quilt show. I was inspired to figure out how to make them. I finished a few and gave them away as Christmas gifts. I would like to make some for me next.
One of my goals right now is to make some quilts to donate to the free closet at church. I have a bunch of quilt tops hanging around that just need finished. In an effort to finish them quickly, I've decided to back them with polar fleece and minimally quilt them. This quilt top was made in the summer and I just finished quilting it on our last snow day.
Years ago, someone left this layer cake of fabric on my desk at school. No note or anything. Well, it's been hanging around in my stash since then and I decided to challenge myself to sew it into something!
I cut the fabric into squares, added some of my solids and threw them into a paper bag. I drew the pieces out at random and sewed them into rows. How fun!! I couldn't wait to see how it turned out!
Today was another snow day sew day for me. I was able sew the rows together into a top and do some simple quilting to finish a second quilt.
