I Made A Whale

Yesterday, I was scrolling through Instagram and saw that one of the people I follow had made the cutest narwhal stuffed toy. That got me thinking about how I had seen a whale doll made out of denim on Pinterest. Sure enough, I had pinned it on my sewing board! After clicking around the internet for awhile, I found this pattern and tutorial. Unfortunately, I'm not able to print right now, so I looked at the pattern pieces and free handed my own pattern as best I could.

For some reason, I have a bunch of denim yardage. I think I bought some to make a skirt once and that never happened. Just recently, I took a bag of old jeans from a past jean quilt to donate and at the bottom of the bag was more denim yardage. Hmm. Not sure where it came from but I used it for this whale!

I had so much fun making this and I think he turned out pretty cute. I don't have any big plans for him, I just wanted to try it! My favorite part was making the little fabric tucks under the lip. They make him seem more realistic. I should have done a few more, I think. There are so many fabric possibilities too, he could be customized for a baby room or color scheme.
If I do make more of these, I may try to adjust my pattern to make a smaller version because this one used up a lot of stuffing. Although, the bigger size does make it like a fun pillow!
I don't like how the tail turned out so I'm thinking of ways to make that better.
So what do you think? Should I give him a name?

Do you ever make something on a whim?
Sometimes that's my favorite kind of creating, especially if it turns out well!
